E is for Events

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that takes many Victorian/Industrial Age technologies, and then thrusts it into a futuristic world. In a steampunk world, there might be flying machines, computers, and ray guns - but built from copper, wood, brass, and using steam as a power source. It's a unique blend of the future and the present that makes steampunk unique.

How important has steampunk events become to the genre of science fiction/fantasy?  Well, during the four day celebration we all know as Comic Con, Saturday has been declared STEAMPUNK DAY.

And for those who love the steampunk genre, there have been a bunch of new events all over the world promoting and celebrating everything steampunk.

Here's just a quick listing of how or where to find steampunk events this spring/summer:

1) Meetup.com. Many cities have started their own little steampunk fan clubs. See if one has sprung up near you.

Do not mess with these steampunks
2) Steampunk Empire Symposium. This will be held from April 27-29th in Cincinnati, OH. Ever notice when you stare at the word "Cincinnati" that it just looks wrong???

3) Aetherfest. May 4-6th in San Antonio, TX. So you can go visit the Alamo, and get your steampunk on!

4) Gaslight Gathering. May 11-13th in San Diego, CA. Did you know that "San Diego" in German means...oh, forget it.

5) Steampunk World's Fair. May 18-20th in Piscataway, NJ. One of the first steampunk fairs in the world.

6) World Steam Expo. May 25-28th in Dearborn, MI. Dearborn, with all the auto plants, feels very steampunky as it is.

7) Steampunk Industrial Revolution. June 8-10th in Nashua, NH. One of their guests is some dude that pierced his body 946 times with 18 gauge needles. I know you wanna see him do that.

8) Gear Con. August 17-19th in Portland, OR. Portland is already weird. It's about to get even weirder come Aug. 17th!

We LOVE steampunk!
9) Dragon*Con. August 31-September 3rd in Atlanta, GA. Okay, so this is one of the biggest science fiction conventions in the country. But steampunk is a HUGE part of this convention. You'll find so many people decked out in all of their steampunk glory at the Saturday parade, and they also hold a Grand Pirate & Time Travelers Ball.

I love going to conventions and seeing people dressed up. One year, the theme at Gen Con was steampunk. Such fantastic costumes! And they aren't easy to do.

Christine: I have yet to go to an actual steampunk convention. But I love seeing ALL the cosplays people make. It's amazing.

Dragon Con is the closest one to me. Always wanted to go, just hate navigating through Atlanta. Eight lanes of traffic both ways and none of it moving...

Never been to Atlanta, but thanks for the warning Alex. Dragon Con and SES in Cincinnati are the closest to me.

Sadly, there aren't any steampunk groups in the Memphis area. I got a lot on my plate right now, but maybe someday.

Cincinnati - it does look wrong. Maybe the letter crop suffered a blight that year. I hope that wasn't their last "a".

Wow! I didn't realize there were quite so many places for steampunk conventions. It would be awesome to go to one. I love the costumes for it.

Alex: I wanna go!!!

Kelly: I just want to go to a big science fiction/fantasy convention. Steampunk or not.

Cherie: Yup. And that's just this summer.

I've always wanted to go to Dragon Con. Last year Matthew MacNish from the QQQE went and blogged about it. Michael Whelan was also at said event (he's my favorite artist of all time). He makes so few public appearances. I fear there will not be many more before he is too old to go and show his work. Man, I need to get busy and find out how I can meet Michael Whelan lol

I have yet to attend an event like this but looks like fun. I think the kids would like it too.

Someday I want my own steampunk outfit. I'd wear it everywhere. :)

I hope to be signing at Dragon Con this year. It will be me first Con.

Michael: Me too. I think the first time I saw his work from a book from the Dragonriders of Pern series.

Stephen: My son wants to go dressed in his steampunk Halloween costume.

Mary: I think you'd wear it well!

Ciara: That would be incredible!

My wife says any time I go to a con I have to take her on a real vacation first. Sigh. She made me promise no double dipping either. So, even one that's close to me is out unless I get her somewhere first.

Rusty: There's always a catch, isn't there???
