J is for Jewelry

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that takes many Victorian/Industrial Age technologies, and then thrusts it into a futuristic world. In a steampunk world, there might be flying machines, computers, and ray guns - but built from copper, wood, brass, and using steam as a power source. It's a unique blend of the future and the present that makes steampunk unique.

Jewelry is in my blood. My grandmother (who died long before I was born) started and ran a growing jewelry business in the Philippines, and I still have family members involved in this industry. I guess I inherited a love of watches (I own a bunch of them) and I can appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship that goes into these works of art.

I want this watch so bad, it hurts.

Dragonfly pendant

Look at those little gears and knobs on this ring!

Yes. Steampunk cufflinks.

So along with the steampunk clothing, the jewelry and accessories are a great way to finish off the look. Me personally, I own a skeleton watch. That's about as steampunk as I can get during working hours.

Cool stuff. I love jewelry, especially braclets. A good friend once called me a bracelet whore, in a good way.

The dragonfly would look cool perched on the visor of my pith helmet.

Huh, you know, I completely expected all of those to be ridiculous, but that dragonfly pendant is actually pretty cool. Neat!

Alex: Thanks, man! Wearing that watch is about as steampunky as I get.

Des: Nope. I have family there, though.

faraway: Yes, in a very good way!

Kelly: It sure would.

Juliana: I'm so glad all of you like the dragonfly pendant. I bought some handmade steampunk things very similar for a contest come July when my book, Dragonfly Warrior, comes out!!!!

I like the dragonfly pendant. That could easily be a conversation piece and it's just cool looking. It'd be cooler if it actually worked and could fly around. I imagine Summer Glau's character in Alphas could pull that off.

Um, the dragonfly pendant is SO going in my WIP. It's a little bit steampunk and I can totally see Piper wearing it. Lovin' your posts.

Michael: Yup. It's gorgeous. That would be cool if you could wind it up and let it fly...hmmm....something to think about.

Jenny: That's cool! Hopefully I can read it.

My dad was a scientist and he loved any watch with gears! I bet he'd enjoy some of your steampunk stuff too!

That first watch might be the greatest thing humanity has ever invented... I really, really, want one of those.

Emily: Thanks Emily!

Eve: The movement of all of those gears working in harmony is hypnotic.

Rusty: I know. They are super expensive too!

That's so cool that you have a history with jewelry. I wish I had a cool history... :)

I like the first watch. For some reason though, I imagine it as something that could be worn around the neck as a choker more than something to be worn on the wrist. A bit of rock star with a vintage twist.

Your appreciation of fine craftsmanship certainly shows in your love of steampunk. I wouldn't have realised those were cufflinks, but now I want a pair!

Jay Noel said...

Kelley: I'm sure you do!

Cynthia: Huh...that's an interesting interpretation. I'd like to see that.

Nick: They look like Chinese throwing stars.

Very cool watch! I got my husband the pocket watch, and when we got married, I got him steampunk cufflinks.

I have a collection of michele watches but also I do have vintage watch similar to the first picture. I bought it from a from of mine and she offered me a quite reasonable price.

Great stuff. I love collecting jewelries, bullion bars, and gold coins. A close friend once called me a jewelry whore, in a good way.
