K is for KEYBOARD

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that takes many Victorian/Industrial Age technologies, and then thrusts it into a futuristic world. In a steampunk world, there might be flying machines, computers, and ray guns - but built from copper, wood, brass, and using steam as a power source. It's a unique blend of the future and the present that makes steampunk unique.

I hope you're not getting sick of steampunk yet! Since the artistic side of this genre is very visual, you've probably noticed my posts getting picture heavy. But oh well!

Typewriters are practically artifacts these days. I'm on the lookout for a really old one to buy and display, actually. Computers are so very modern. Combine the two, add some steampunk flair, and here is what you get:

This reminds me of The Time Machine (1960)

Love the velvet at the top and the fancy side panels

The space bar looks like a Tesla coil

What's a keyboard without its mouse?

Like the second one - very intricate design on the side.

I first started writing stories on my father's old typewriter when I was a kid, and to this day I still have a small fetish for those round, gold-rimmed keys! Thanks for bringing back some really cool memories, Jay!

When my husband and I helped an elderly gentleman clean out his house when he was moving into a nursing home, he told me to just toss his old typewriter into the dumpster. It was circa the '20s, I suppose, and had to have been one of the earliest ideas of a "portable" version. Came in a black leather-covered case with a soft brown leather (dry-rotted) handle. Beautiful gold-rimmed round keys. So, instead of throwing it away, I brought it home. Ended up giving it to a friend who collects such things.

we love picture heavy posts, Jay, don't forget that those are always the most popular ones :)

The keyboards are cool, but I need a new mouse. Is that one PC compatible?

Alex: That's my favorite too.

Vero: I'd like to find an old one and put it up for display in my den.

Susan: I would've kept it!!!

Dez: Feel like I'm cheating with the pics, but steampunk is super visual.

Pk: I completely agree!

Kelly: I think so, but don't make it angry, as it might zap you.

I don't think I've read too much of this genre, because I don't remember such intricate details actually being described in a book. I think Hollywood might have interpreted some things with detailed effects and that's cool. Filigree side panels on typewriters would probably have me dropping my book and falling asleep. Did you see the elephant picture on my FB? I shared it for you!

Kelly: Cool. I will check it out.

Eve: I think you're right. "Feligree!" Dang, I was trying to think of what that design was but my brain couldn't come up with it. Thank you so much.

I have never seen anything like that! Kudos to the person who made and designed that--that's pure steampunk heaven.

First time I have seen this as well and I must admit it is way cool. Wish I would have noticed it sooner but thanks for sharing Jay. Look forward to seeing more posts like this. Take care.

I've seen a lot of Steampunk devices. I've often thought the computer related stuff was the best canvas to use when steampunking an object. Not sure why, maybe it's the mixture of solid state equipment with the old clockwork look.

Of course, you were only talking about keyboards today. But they're related.

Ooh, it's beautiful! I wish it was affordable as well, but I really can't imagine that it is. It's really functional art. <3

Just another A to Z Challenger stopping by...

I love that old typewriter!

Jay Noel said...

Cherie: My 1st choice too.

Cynthia: I'm glad you're not burned out on it!

Lydia: Must have taken a LONG time to build.

Shife: Thanks buddy!

Rusty: I agree. I think it's because steampunking a computer is a perfect way to blend old and new. Plus we use computers everyday, so it's practical and gorgeous.

Nicki: Function art is right. It's not cheap, that's for sure.

Lass: Me too!
