Z is for Z. Cavaricci

Parachute pants, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Growing Pains, L.A. Gear, Breakfast Club....what do all of these have in common? They all helped define the 80s. Come take a fun "Journey" with me as we revisit the totally radical decade.

Well, this is it. We've come to the letter Z. And for my final post, Z is for Z. Cavaricci

You know, the pants that was all the rage from about 1984 until the early 90s. They had a $70 price tag, and only the cool rich kids could wear them. You could spot a pair of Z. Cavaricci's pretty quickly.

1) They were worn pretty high up. Like tuxedo pants. Or maybe like how your grandpa wears his trousers. We're talking up to the rib cage.

2) Kids usually sported a silver belt to go along with the pants.

3) They flared out like MC Hammer pants with multiple pleats, and then came down to a tight taper around the ankles. Most also rolled and pegged the bottoms to make them extra tight. Made everyone look like clowns.

4) Finally, you could spot the little white tag right on the fly that bore the name: Z. Cavaricci

5) Most of the guys that wore them were douche bags.

The epitome of cool

Cynthia said...

Yes, I remember those pants! I remember how trendy they were, and how guys wore them to "fancy" events, like school dances. LOL!

Sheena-kay Graham said...

Have fin with your $70 pants. Seriously? Congrats on making it to the end Jay.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Douche bags - funny! Proud to say I never owned a pair.

Matthew MacNish said...

Are those dudes in that photo? How douchey.

Z Cavaricci was even worse than Girbaud, and that's bad.

It's been a pleasure surviving the challenge with your help, Jay! Thanks so much.

Melanie Schulz said...

Isn't that so funny? People will wear anything they think makes them look rich, even if they end up looking ridiculous.

DEZMOND said...

I'm kinda glad I've never heard of them LOL Seems like something MC HAMMER would wear proudly :)
Wait, those are boys in the pic???

Jay Noel said...

Cynthia: With their Genera sweaters

Sheena: We did it!!!

Alex: Me neither. Couldn't afford them, and they let me know it.

Matthew: Yeah, they were that bad. It was fun!

Melanie: VERY ridiculous

Dez: I know, I had to do a double-take too. They are dudes.

Michael Offutt, "Johnny on the Spot" said...

They'll come back. Just give it some time.

farawayeyes said...

I thought those pants were 'hysterical'. Some of the fashions of the 80's are a real 'what were we thinking?' At least, I was spared this particular embarrassment by the price tag.

BTW,IMO (I actually hate all those letter deals, but...) your 80's theme made for the most fun and interesting A to Z posts. Could be just me, but I loved it.

The Desert Rocks said...

Way better than the alternative, which were called Angelflights! Gross, tight and polyester!

Angeline Trevena said...

What an excellent topic for your A-Z! I was born in 1980, so I don't remember the entire decade, but I'm going to have a nose round your other posts for some nostalgia.

Jay Noel said...

Michael: I know. The tapered pants are already back in style.

faraway: I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It was fun revisiting the 80s. Lots of nostalgia.

Eve: That doesn't sound very comfortable.

Angeline: Cool! Thanks for visiting on this final day.

Dana said...

Oh, man. I remember those. *snort*

nutschell said...

oh lordy. $70 pants? with pleats in front, no less. :D

Susan Kane said...

I remember those! I saw them on the clearance rack in KMart once--cheap at the end of their run.

I loved this:
"...Most of the guys that wore them were douche bags."

L. Diane Wolfe said...

I had one friend who could wear these and still look good. He was the only one though.

M Pax said...

I don't remember those pants' name, but I do remember seeing them around in the 80's. Jordache was what us gals wanted on our behinds. :D

Nick Wilford said...

Are those guys??

I kind of recognise the style, but I'm pretty glad I was too young to be even remotely concerned with fashion in the 80s. Let's face it, I'm still not.

Congrats on getting through the Challenge!

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

I remember the kids wearing those to school. 70$ was a lot of money for pants in the 80's.
Have you announced the release date for your book?

Robin said...

Couldn't afford those and they weren't the fashion choice I was wishing for and crying over that I couldn't have. In the late 80s Guess Jeans became all the rage. I spent more time combing sale racks looking for those jeans. Before that it was Jordache. Jeans were always the thing that had me tearing my hair out.

Brinda said...

I'd forgotten about those. I've loved your A to Z. And that pic of the guys? Wow...I'm glad we aren't in the 80s.

I know guys, $70 for a pair of ugly-ass pants! Makes no sense.

Susan: No official publication date, although I'm hoping for this summer. I'm in deep edits with two editors, and my publisher has the cover art. Can't wait to tell you guys more!

Shakin' my pom-poms for you finishing. *\o/*

$70 pants. Huzzah to the 80s. I think, aside from the hair, the pleated pants were the worst part.

Samantha May said...

Oh my gosh. That these pants EVER saw the light of day...

I've loved your theme! Thanks for teaching me about the 80's :)

Tammy Theriault said...

you mean i shouldn't wear mine anymore??? crap joel!!! buzz kill!!

Gina Gao said...

Some people at school still wear those pants.

~Sia McKye~ said...

Oh, I remember them. God, I thought they were ugly, lol! I wasn't cool. Gimme a good pair of jeans instead.

The Golden Eagle said...

Those are crazy pants.

Congratulations on finishing the A to Z Challenge!

Maurice Mitchell said...

Thank goodness I never met anybody who write those hilarious things.

Jay Noel said...

Huh...they still sell them on E-bay. Amazing.

Mr. Shife said...

I remember those pants but never wore them. They were expensive but I just thought you looked stupid wearing them so I passed. Congrats on your A-Z posts. Good stuff buddy.

David List said...

I realize I'm late to this party but this is freaking hilarious. I seriously can't discern the gender of one of the people in that photograph. I think #5 is not only the most crucial statement, but the sum of all the other statements as well.
Those are the deepest pleats I've ever seen.

Phats said...

I came in after these were popular but I remember them I was in elementary. My generation was Guess Jeans and they had to be tight rolled
