A is for "Angel Eyes"

Oftentimes, lightning only strikes once for many singers and bands. My A-Z Challenge for 2014 will focus on those glorious "one hit wonders" spanning the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Some are my favorite songs, others are just plain memorable (for better or for worse). Join me in celebrating these 26 one hit wonders in pop music!

I was 17 years old when I heard The Jeff Healey's Bands, "Angel Eyes" play on the radio. After this bluesy, country song became a hit, I remember seeing Jeff Healey in the movie Roadhouse. So I always associate this talented singer/musician with that movie.

When he was only a year old, Jeff Healey has both eyes removed due to a very rare cancer. Unfortunately, cancer would eventually claim his life in 2008 at the young age of 41.

"Angel Eyes" is his only big hit, but it's a wonderful song. It's romantic and poetic, and it was on the US Charts for 22 weeks in 1989.

He lost his eyes at the age of one and died at forty-one? How sad.

I've never heard that song before. Very smooth, even though it's not my "genre". :P

I love your theme. Gosh, I remember that song. Used to roller skate backwards to it at the skating rink. It saddens me to know some of Jeff Healey's struggles, and makes me appreciate his accomplishments even more. Thank you.

"Angel Eyes" is a wonderful song and removing his eyes gave him another year of life, which is worth it. Can't wait to read your book Jay!

I remember that song... and it is/was great. I wasn't aware of Jeff Healey's story. How sad. 41 is just so darn young. And losing your eyes to cancer at the age of on ONE. It means he probably didn't remember seeing. It's hard to imagine that...

Have never heard this one but it reminds me to write some more and maybe I'll be a one-hit wonder--someday. LOL

Video doesn't work in Canada. . .oh well. I remember that song and Jeff Healy. A sad story, like many musicians.

Nice! Somehow I missed this one. I'm going to be one cultured fellow when this challenge is over. :)

Ironic. Can't see the video in Canada...he was Canadian.

I remember hearing more than one song by him but there's also a law about Canadian content up here so they probably played more than Angel Eyes.

Now that song as a much deeper meaning. I didn't know about the loss of his eyes.

Oh my gosh, I had forgotten all about this song. I was 20 in 1989 and it was a fun year for me. The song brings back lots of good memories.
Looking forward to your theme!

I don't think I've heard this song before, but it's very good. It's sad that he lost his eyes and later his life to the same cancer :(

Thanks for sharing!

Geez...video doesn't work in Canada? That's messed up, and ironic, since he's Canadian like Jen pointed out.

Not my song but you like it and so do those who made it a hit. So sad that he STILL died of cancer after losing his eyes. But he still got 41 years of life and a hit song.

I loved the song. Here via atoz.

That's such a sad story... I never knew the story behind the song, but the title... well, it's almost "fitting", if that doesn't sound crass. I don't mean it to.

I've always loved Jeff Healey and that is my favorite song of his. Its sad he died so young.

Despite having just one big hit around the world, Jeff Healey continued to be an important musical icon in Canada. He did a lot of jazz and blues stuff that didn't play on Top 40, but it was so good it made Angel Eyes seem ridiculous. His version of Stuck in the Middle With You, in my opinion, was just head and shoulders above the original by Stealer's Wheel. Such a tragedy that he died so young. http://youtu.be/k_UaOx2nT78
