IWSG for July

Purpose of the Insecure Writers Support Group: To share and encourage. Writers are allowed to let all of our anger, frustrations, and insecurities to like-minded writers, which is cheaper than getting counseling.

I had a fun little vacation in the Ozarks, so I spent a lot of time in the sun and in the water. But I got some bad news when I came back to reality. Part of being in the corporate world is the fact that you're an insignificant little tiny cog in the great big machine, so you don't really matter to the powers-that-be.

Let's just say that I hope that I don't end up living in a van down by the river.

So this month, obviously I'm insecure about my job. Which, in turn, makes me insecure about money. And of course, that includes being able to put food on the table and keep the roof over our heads.

Since I am also my own publisher, I rely on what little I sock away in a separate bank account to pay for stuff like...copies of my paperback book to sell, artwork for covers, editing, formatting, etc. It ain't cheap. So with my job security in jeopardy, I'm not sure where that will leave my publishing venture. I think I have maybe $50 left in that account.
And I HATE government cheese

Maybe.

This will be a very tough few weeks as I continue to grind it out with my job, do my best to prove my worth. And hopefully be able to weather the storm. Yet, I have to make sure I've got Plan B in the works, which is time consuming too.

That leaves very little time for writing. I was up until almost 3 AM over the weekend, trying to push my latest WIP towards the finish line. I hope to get it done before all this crap hits the fan.

Yup, my middle name is INSECURE for sure.

Have a wonderful 4th of July, my fellow Americans.

Jay, sorry to hear that! That really sucks. Anything we can do to help, let us know. Maybe there are cheaper resources for some of the things you need.

I hope you can prove your worth to them. That is just such terrible news.

Have you ever gone to a local bookstore and staged a full-day book signing? There was a guy who used to do that where I used to work. He'd plant himself right near the entrance and snag people as they entered, and wouldn't leave until he'd sold all the books he'd brought with him. Seemed to work for him. Anyway, an idea.

We could share a van down by the river. I'm pretty much in the same boat.

I hope things work out with your work. I know how that situation can affect a person. It's hard.

I'll be thinking about you and your beautiful family. I know things will work out for you.

Praying that things turn out well with your job. Just do what your best and trust that it will be okay no matter how it turns out. Sometimes we lose one thing only to find something better. So, maybe there is a silver lining if you lose that job.

Keep writing! You know that there is nothing like Life Experience to give our writing depth. If your life were a novel, you would be in the crisis/conflict. As it is for our MCs, so it is for us, it is all about what we do next!

That sucks to hear, Jay. I'm hoping a new and better opportunity comes your way.

Hi Jay! I feel your pain. My husband recently lost his job and ended up in Iraq so he could continue working. I'm trying to find full-time employment too so that once he finished his contract he can look for something closer to home and we can still support ourselves. It's hard not to obsess over what might happen, but since there are multiple scenarios, start looking for something new now! Hopefully you are on LinkedIn? And a member of local job seeker groups? And your resume is up to date? Good luck weathering this tough period!

Uh-oh. I hope you stay in your job. I haven't spent a cent on my book. The fact I have no Paypal (it doesn't recognize Egypt) takes away the temptation to pay for editors or buying my own book to make the Amazon ranking better. I just chill out and concentrate on writing my next book. Writing's supposed to be making me money, not the other way around.

Hope you can prove you're indispensable, not a good place to be :( Sending lots of positive vibes to get your WIP finished and out of the way in case the proverbial hits the fan.

Aw, Jay! I'm so sorry to hear about your job. It is happening where I live like mad, so many people have lost their jobs here due to down-sizing and corporate cut backs and the closing of three casinos. It's left hundreds of people without work. And that's never a fun place to be! Try and keep your head up. Maybe something else, something better is out there, just waiting for you . On a positive note, always remember you are a writer at heart; no one can take that position away from you!

Self-publishing can be very expensive, but it's good that you're keeping it separate from your expenses. Here's hoping you don't end in a van down by the river Man. "I can't see too good. Is that Bill Shakespeare over there?"

I'm really sorry about your job being in jeopardy, Jay. Let's hope that turns around and doesn't put in the unemployed category. And here I thought our employment numbers were looking good. Take care of yourself and let us know how things go. If you need a free read or whatever on your manuscript let me know. That's some help, but probably not what you need right now.
