I'm Still Alive!

Over seven months since my last blog post...dang.

Just like many things, if you stop blogging even just for a little bit, it's pretty easy to just let it fall by the wayside. I really had no intention of taking another hiatus since February, but life has been a roller coaster ride.

The good news is, I've gotten my health back. No that I'm no longer bedridden, I've been working on building back all the muscle that wasted away. I was so weak, I could barely walk. By summer, I was going on walks again and working out. Now, I'm back to doing all the things I could do before I got sick last year.

The bad news...what the hell has happened to social media while I've been gone? Holy crap.

Honestly, all the vitriol and hatred is a big reason why I've stayed away. The political climate we live in is unbearable. I've been spending more and more time unplugged and disconnected to the interwebs.

Creatively, my well has now been dry for over 18 months. Yup. Not one new word has been written. Life had gotten in the way, and I'm looking to recapture my creativity. I'm going back into counseling to hopefully brush away any remnants of depression that hung on my shoulders like a wet coat. Serious illness has a way of making you feel helpless and depressed. I think once I feel lighter, my need to write will come back.

I did attend two comic cons this year. One is April and another in June. But that took all the energy I could muster, so I decided to do a small library event later in November, and that's all I'm going to do for the rest of 2016. Even though it took a lot out of me, being in front of readers and fans was so worth it. It's my biggest high. Seriously.

I hope you are all doing well, and I look forward to catching up with each and every one of you very very soon.

Take care, and much love...

Jay

Jay! Good to hear from you.
Glad your health is back.
I've only written a couple short stories in the past two years, so I understand. Ease back in and ma the creativity take over.

Hello Jay! Good to hear from you. I'm glad you are recovering and getting your strength back. Yeah, the mind needs to recovery too. Do what you can and take it easy.

Alex: I think easing into it is the best way. I'm tempted to dive in and set my expectations high, which is not a good thing.

Holly: My brain is usually swimming with all the stuff going on. I'm hoping that writing time is my escape from the madness.

Good to see you again Jay. Being sick is no fun. I'm sure you'll continue to recover as you slowly get back into things. Best wishes.

I'm glad to hear you're doing better. Yeah, I try to ignore all the political stuff as much as possible. And it's so hard to write when you're not in the best health. I hope you get back to it soon. :)

Hi Jay! I'm glad you're not confined to a bed anymore and have your strength back.

Negativity has hit a high online. I just ignore it.

Glad to see you're back!! And elated to hear your health is better.

The vitriol is out of control. I too have unplugged. You can't even have a reasonable conversation with some people, so what is the point?

My husband loved your books, and he is so very picky. You need to just write. Tell yourself you have a reader who counts on you!

I choose who I communicate online with carefully. If they can't carry a civil conversation there's a block and or mute button in their future. So my online love is still high. Glad to hear you're doing better Jay and take everything one day at a time. Nanowrimo on twitter has writing sprints so if you ever want to try a few to get a few words down, it might help. Do you though and all the best.

Welcome back and great your health is back. Yep, a lot of crap online indeed.

Glad you're feeling better now. There are exercises and prompts you can find online to try to get your creativity fired up again.

Haven't met yet, but I hope you are feeling better. I've done the bed-ridden thing more than I care to go into (Hey, it inspires writing! ...*depressed chuckle*...)

Keep it up and you'll do fine!

Glad to see you're back and doing better, Jay!

Don't worry about the creativity - it's still there, just waiting for you to be ready for it again. And don't forget NaNo is coming up, in case you're looking for a mega way to get back into writing. :)

Hey, good to have you back! I totally get the drained thing. I had about 2 or 3 years that were like that--bed ridden most the time. I think being that worn out kinda saps you, not just mentally and emotionally, but creatively too. The negative voices in your head can get so loud that they drown out any possibility of productivity. BUT. You're back. You kicked this thing in its ugly face and fought your way free. Way to go!

Jay!!! It has been so long. I didn't realize how long until now. I am glad you have your health back. Social media has sure become nasty. I try to avoid it. Except for my blog. :) When you're struggling with your health, it's easy for creativity to go away. That happens to me. Now that you're better, I hope the words come soon.

So good to see you back, Jay! I'm sorry for what you went through but so glad your health has returned. And you are so right about the online vitriol. I haven't been using social media as much myself. I'm sure your creativity will return with a vengeance now that you have your health back. Take care!

I hear you, Jay. Sending love. Depression is a beast. Sigh. But you're doing it. Proud of every step you take.

I was so happy to see you pop back up and am glad to hear you're doing better. There is a lot of ugliness with the election season upon us but there's also some kind people around. Glad to have one of them back.

Hey Dude; check out my blog post today for a review of Dragonfly Warrior. I hope it brightens your day :)

Hi Jay - glad to see you're up and about and beginning to feel more like your earlier self - the creative ideas will start coming back ... DragonFly Warrior sounds fun ... so good luck with that and the others ... and carry on getting stronger ... cheers Hilary

My creative muse kind of comes and goes too. Right now I'm on a bit of an upswing so we'll see what happens as a result. It's fantastic to see that you are feeling better. And I just read a great review of your book, Dragonfly Warrior, over at Dolorah's website (I see she commented).

Sounds like a rough year. I have just started a new short story for a contest. The last time I started something fresh? Last year, same contest. I really want to get into a better, more productive writing schedule and hope you can get back to it as well. Good luck on your continuing recovery.

It is too easy to step away and not come back. I've been dealing with my own issues and am now venturing back to the blogosphere. Life does get in the way sometimes, but it's what it's all about. Change and then more change. I do hope your health issues are changing for the better! It takes time and effort, just don't give up, depression is a harsh demon that sometimes only writing can defeat. Wishing you health and happiness and unlimited writing inspiration!

Lexa Cain said...

It's great to see you back! I'm glad you had a good time at the cons and that you're looking forward to the library event. Fan feedback is awesome! I hope your muse returns soon.

Anna Soliveres said...

LOL, right there with you, friend. :) It just happens. Then inspiration hits, we feel compelled to reach out, blog, put thoughts to words and share. Maybe this time of the year is more inspiring than any of the other seasons.
Also, I have yet to attend a comic-con, how awesome that you got to attend two this year! It's on my bucket list for sure!
